Victor Valentine. Vampire. I risked loving him. I'm not willing to risk losing him.

What courses through my veins doesn't make me what I am or who I am. I was forged by my parents' love- and my brother's. Their deaths shaped me further, but the foundation that they gave me provided the strength to not only survive but to follow my heart.
And that led me to Victor.

I have a terrible feeling that Victor can be much, much more persuasive if he wants to be. But will that unleash the monster within? Will Victor lose what makes him so human if he has to resort to such horrific things that he locked away long ago?

I had to fight for my place in the vampire world. Now I may have to fight for it in the human world.

I gave the human and vamp a chance at life. How can they fault that? I want the vampires to be better than that. I want them to be out allies. I want them to have a spark of humanity. Because a part of them is in me.

I have been every step of the way, but these last few are the easiest. The journey, which started back when I was a scared girl trapped in a closet as my brother was taken, will end behind this door that holds the most powerful vampires in the world. And I won't bow to them. They will bow to me. Because this city has shown me everything I need to know. The Old Families aren't powerful, they're feeble.

If this was a fairytale, I'd be a princess. But I stopped believing in fairy tales a long time ago.

"Dawn's beautiful," Victor grounds out.
"She's short."
"I'm not short," I say sharply," And don't talk about me like I'm not here."
"Are you even five and a half feet?"
I clench my teeth.
"Most women are short compared to you," Richard says.

I wrap my arms around his shoulders and bury my face against his neck.
"I'm so afraid that it changes everything.That I'll be alone... Like Sin."
"You'll never be like Sin," he growls.
He threads his fingers through my hair, cradling the back of my head.
"You're not like Sin."
Then he covers my mouth with his, kissing me desperately as though he has the power to change what I might be... what this might mean.

My life, everything I've always believed, was built on a foundation of lies and I can feel it shifting beneath me, turning into dust, just as vampires become ash.
