A smile dawns on his face, and I swoop down to kiss his lips as they part, and I swear I can savor the sweetness of everything that he is on them. He’s the first taste of coffee in the morning, the smell of rain on dry earth, the lights on a Christmas tree, and the sea wind in my face as I walk along the beach.

While he’s impacted my life in a strange, almost profound way, I haven’t done the same for him. He’ll go on unchanged in his life through knowing me, while I’ll carry him like the shells I used to bring home from Polzeath as a child.
