Although neither Doolittle nor Spaatz realized it, while the strategic bombing campaign had not been decisive in itself, the way it was used to draw the German air force into a losing battle of attrition was decisive. The attrition of the Luftwaffe became the prime ingredient in winning the air war in Europe.
