Cussy continues to amaze me. She fully accepts that she will be discriminated against, yet has a love for humans & a heart full of compassion. What she is willing to endure to help others -- with typically little benefit to herself -- is incredible.

Cussy, your strength is something to be admired. Even when faced with fear, you find the strength to do what’s right for those you love. You find strength to do what’s generous even as you are shunned.

As I try to write this post I’m at a loss for words. The fact that this book takes place at what seems not that long ago, the late 1930s, is hard to fathom. The hardships, struggles, hunger is beyond comprehension to me in a time not so very long ago.
