This reads like a good police procedural most of the time. Somehow that makes the floating coffins, the desecrated Indian burial grounds, the strange slices on the bodies of the dead and the deadly tentacles that the police don't know about yet, seem both more believable and much more scary.

A nice balance here between a good police procedural and some truly disturbingly well-described dead bodies which bring then the threat of something old, powerful and very unhappy.
