Friend: Star Trek Discovery says Season 3 will have the first Non-Binary character in Star Trek History and first trans character too.
Me: Cool.
Friend: They forgot TNG and DS9 already did both those things.

Friend: Also the Trill aliens. If you become a host you could have the memory of being male or female in your last life so this new Trill character who is non-binary just fits into the Trill Host role as Dax did. Dax had been mostly in male bodies and then was placed in two female identifying hosts, so I would attribute that to being non-binary in a way.The rep is great but this is like when Disney has a queer character in a new film and everyone is like "Disney has its first queer character", no the first queer character happened quite a few "firsts" ago.

One of the aliens identifies as female and is sent for reconditioning near the end of the episode.
In TNG and again in DS9 they had trans characters. The one in TNG went from male to female and I think the one from DS9 was female in the first appearance and showed up later as a male and was called by the same name and Miles goes "You look happier."
Then of course there was the Ferengi "woman" who disguised herself as a man so she could do men's work. I always got the sense she was actually a he. He did say something about feeling more comfortable in a male role so I'm gonna say he's a guy.
And if we are going with actors then again there have already been Non-Binary and Trans* actors on Star Trek but some came out as such later in life you know when the world was more accepting of that.
Me: You know a lot about Star Trek
Friend: What can I say I'm a nerd. Gene Roddenberry was ahead of his fucking time. Why does no one acknowledge his awesomeness?
- First inter-racial kiss on TV
- Hired POC actors to play POC roles who were considered equal to the white characters
- Knowingly hired LGBTQ people
- Dropped hints all the time about people not being straight, some more obvious than others
- That dude who had a baby in DS9, yes he was an alien but his hubby was human
Me: Wow!
