Learning that Gertrude Stein's writing style was not just about playing with form in the manner of abstract painting but also served to obscure her lesbian subject matter during a time when it wasn't acceptable to write about... how did I not know this or think of this before.

I have so many thoughts, reading this book as a lesbian in 2020 and thinking about how if I lived a century ago I would have been classified as an invert, probably. It's so intense to consider. And of course, there are so many echoes of this history we can feel and see around us today.

I'm learning so much from this book.
