Struggling with this a bit. Move it the characters are jumping off the page at me and I don't understand the motivations of a lot of them. Plus the Playing only makes some sense to me...

"I know he tried to rape you but he's over of us and we don't condemn our own" is... a choice. I hope this is challenged more as there book goes on. At it is, it seems "look, he feels bad about it" seems to be it.
