Wait. Semple wrote for Arrested Development? If I weren't already enjoying this so much, that would have sold it even more to me.

I saw you gave it 5 stars. Impressive. Ann picked it for book club. Wish you were here to discuss with us.
I looooved the satire. It is hard to make a funny book about something serious (infidelity, feminism, mental illness, grief) and make it work (at least I haven't been able to find them) and my rating was for semple's art with humor than plot or characters. It was such a unique and fresh book with more depth than its given credit for. I know lots of people who disliked the swearing and I get that but, yeah, great writing with such an enjoyably poked fun of Seattle and hyper schools and moms.
I'm loving the satire so far. And I agree: It is hard to find a balance with humor and serious topics. From the part I've read it's very well done.
I get to go to a reading she is doing in a few weeks, hadn't made the arrested development connection yet, thanks for pointing it out!
