This is an interesting article from 2011 that talks about the different thought process between "bright girls" and "bright boys" and why these bright girls might give up early on something they COULD achieve: http://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/t... It's interesting to consider when in context of my own life. That's exactly what I do to myself.

Ais That's true and I wonder what the psychology of that is. On the other hand, it also means if you are raised with compliments, at some point those will stop and that could lead a person to believe that they no longer deserve compliments because they're no longer good enough. So that could itself be a self-esteem issue.

Probably what would work best is a combination of encouragement and compliments to balance it out between being told you're doing a good job and not believing you're only good if people voluntarily tell you this.
