Nicholas Flamel goes off to find the sword Clarent, the sword that killed King Arthur of Britain. Meanwhile John Dee and his accomplice Nicolo summons a beast from the world tree called Nidhhog and sends it to attack Scathach while she was celebrating with her friend that she met in Paris Joan of Arc. Josh goes off on his own and is "awakened" by Mars who was known as the God of War.

Nicholas Flamel manages to escape John Dee with his allies Josh Newman, Sophie Newman whom are twins and Scathatch a vampire. They manage to teleport to Paris and meet Nicholas old friend and student Comte de Saint-Germain who perfers to be called Francis. However Paris is under the control of Nicolo Machiavelli, an ally of John Dee. While Nicholas and his allies flee to a hidden base, Nicholas goes off on his own.
