Either this book is a standalone or it isn’t. Pretty much all the marketing says it’s standalone yet there’s constant references to incidents from a previous novel. So which is it?

Do people in Vienna really eat that much? Every historical fiction work I have read that takes place in Vienna has characters constantly eating at one place or another.

I don't know why some authors just assume you've read all of their previously published works. Like no.

Once you start reading this book it becomes pretty obvious you aren't reading the first book in a series. So say that. Label the book as such. And if you want it to be a standalone then don't constantly reference all the things that happened in the previous book. It definitely didn't make me want to go out and get the first book.
