I am listening to an audiobook edition in German translation. Balzac's description of his personnel is delightful. but I struggle to understand the French society after the restauration of monarchy. I had a similar feeling when reading "The Red and the Black".

Their smugness perhaps come from being backed by virtually all European monarchies to remain in power after Napoleon I's downfall... And it might in some cases come from a will to regain their former influence and power, that is before their properties got confiscated and themselves, exiled... What is your opinion, Peter?
