I read lots of books, and then I read Tolstoy and I wonder why I bother to read lots of books. They are all shite compared to what he writes.

Wow Tolstoy is an amazing writer. Why does anybody else bother writing. I mean it is also poorly written rot when compared to this.

"I am so enchanted by the brilliancy of the wit and culture of the society, more especially of the feminine society, in which I have had the honour of being received, that I have not yet had time to think of the climate"
The abbe is really just treating Anna Pavlovna the way she treats everyone else, but he seems to think her a stupid women who doesn't realise. He is afraid of her, she is not afraid of him.

I love the way Abbe speaks to Anna Pavlovna. He was talking comfortably with Pierre until she came along.
Then his whole countenance changes. He is both condescending and clueless. He doesn't enjoy the company of women, possibly sees them as beneath the intelligence level of men, and consequently seems to think he can charmingly lather on praise.

I loved when Anna Pavlovna interuptted the conversation between Pierre and Prince Andrew Bolonksy.
Pavlovna is displeased because the conversation is too honest. "Both were talking and listening too eagerly and too naturally, which is why Anna Pavlovna disapproved"
We have a woman supervising her guests to make sure everyone is being suitably entertained, but only so long as they are not too honest and serious.

Anna Pavlovna is a wonderful hostess. Incredibly fake, smiles and laughs and does things just to please her guests - but very good at it.
The little Bolonksy princess is clearly bored (or lacks understanding) by the conversations that are going on, she constantly watches Pavlovna and mimics her facial expressions.
