The first one was slow but had potential, so since this one is free in the Smashie sale right now, I figured I'd give it a whirl and see if it improves like others have said.

This is tighter than the first book, but it's a novella. I suspect if it were full-length, it'd be rambling on too.

That's strange -- I can't find it anywhere on Smashwords. 🧐

Here it is:https://www.smashwords.com/books/view...
The others are pretty deeply discounted too, so if this one does work out (though with my current slump, who knows, I may be setting this one up to fail) I'll pick up the others too.
Thanks, Linda. I searched by title, both the short version and long version, then searched by author, for the 3 different names she showed up under, and although the other books in the series came up, that one did not. I knew I was going to need a direct link, so thank you!I'd be out of my mind to try another Melissa Scott book, because her writing style drives me absolutely stark raving bonkers, but it *is* free, and I've already read the first one (see: absolutely stark raving bonkers) so... of course I'm getting it.
I wonder how many other freebies are similarly hidden from hopeful searchers. Perhaps Smashwords has been taking lessons from GR on how to run a website...?
For future reference in case you have the same problem with other books, Teal, I had no trouble finding this one on Smashwords directly from its GR page. If you have the Smashwords site among the links saved in the Get a Copy section, you just have to click on it and it brings you right to the book page on Smashwords.

But your comment about having the Smashwords site in the links (which I don't, but will add, thanks) reminded me that my Library Extension browser extension should be showing Smashwords data, and does not. So I guess I'll go troubleshoot that. 🤬 The good news is that, honestly, I don't need any more books, free or otherwise.
I rarely find new books by myself on Smashwords during sales, I rely on recommendations from friends or I find something I already had on my tbr, after checking if they put it on sale. I've never found that site user-friendly to navigate, I just stick with it out of sheer stubborness because I don't want to buy exclusively from Amazon if I don't have to.
It's a shame Smashwords doesn't make an effort to capitalize on the disaffected Amazon customers looking for a more worthy site to buy from. A little bit of work on their sad excuse for a website might go a long way.
