Stendhal defined Romanticism in literature as that most likely to please the contemporary public, whereas classicism was what would most likely appeal to its grandparents. Thus the past was dismissed: it was simply irrelevant.

Brookner tells us that by using Baudelaire's definition then both Inges and Delacroix can be considered Romantics even though both declared themselves to be working in the classical tradition.
Everyone is a Romantic especially if they deny it. But if everything is Romanticism is the term lacking in specific meaning ?
