Why is the term ASIAN universally understood as pertaining to Japanese/Chinese/Mongloids?

What do they refer to the rest of the nations technically a part of Asia as?

rahul Even I could never understand this reference.

Lit Bug (Foram) Yeah, am not even being sarcastic, just want to know how it all started.

Warwick Maybe that's more in the US. In Britain, "Asian" usually means "from the Indian subcontinent" (which is equally selective but....different)

Derek I'm with Warwick. In Canada, Asian tends to be used for Indian subcontintent (often prefixed with "South-") or all of Asia except the Middle East (which people never seem to think of as Asia). Then there's South-east Asian, which is clearly different.
