For the first category, you might like The Dervish House by Ian McDonald, set in Istanbul in the near future. Quite good. His novel River of Gods and a sequel are set in India, although I haven't read them yet.

@Jacob - I read some reviews of 'The Dervish House' along with the blurb and think it will serve my purpose more than I intended!
