So far, this book has been nothing but a nasty guilt trip to nowhere. It is so overly dramatic that at times I wonder if the drama isn’t in fact meant as a veneer for comedy. Why did so many friends recommend it to me?

It doesn't really get better. I made myself finish it when I read it some years ago because at that time I had not read much Korean literature and wasn't really sure if I was missing something but if I were reading it today I'd likely set it aside/DNF. You may want to do that as well.
