Also the author just described a Victorian serialized account of the workhouse as "a striptease" for the starved victorian public and I think it's about time to call it a night with this one.

Still eye-rolling over the Freudian assertion that victorian women were driven to help the poor bc of some sort of subconscious association of the dirt of poverty and their own repressed sexual dirtiness but other than that it's well-written and researched and doesn't gloss over the complex and varied responses to victorian charity by those on the receiving end of it.
