Mickle getting shot I did not remember. The plot reveal about Florian I did not remember. Both of those were pretty interesting.

“He vaguely recalled he had been a child in Dorning, but the memory carried no weight. He was what he was now, and a stranger in his own past. He was Colonel Kestrel and had never been anything else.”

One thing I’m noticing about this author is how he skips over battles or romances or other moments of great character development just to get to the after effects. At least, sometimes. And honestly more power to him. I completely respect that. Validates my own approach to such things.

“I’m not going to stay dead the rest of my life.”

He put his memories to paintings. Memories of pain. Paintings of dirt. “You’ve managed to turn dust into art.”

“Theo had vanished...from himself.”

“His private shame had become a matter of public pride.”

“He had survived the war; he was not sure he could survive the peace.”

“For turning themselves into beasts for the sake of the kingdom.” War for what it is, that says plainly.
