Daniel in Everything Sad is Untrue is downtrodden, because Daniel is the embodiment of it. Daniel is a Persian refugee from Iran who had to leave his past life behind and his father to escape to safety in Oklahoma. He is often trodden down upon by his community and does nothing about it. He acts like he accepts the fact that his purpose is to be abused, which is why his character is shaped by him being downtrodden.
