J Kaplan is finished with A Dance with Dragons (A Song of Ice and Fire, #5)
This book has multiple story lines in it. Jon Snow and his story will be used. Snow must lead the Night Watch to success, but he has to break precedents to do so. These broken precedents lead to faltering loyalty in his men which leads to instances of rising action. An example of this is when Bowen Marsh, Lord Steward under Jon Snow, openly criticized Snow's decision to open the wall to Wildlings, a broken precedent.

J Kaplan is on page 783 of 824 of The Gathering Storm (The Wheel of Time, #12)
A significant moment in The Gathering Storm was when Rand, the main character, climbed the Dragonmount and destroyed the most powerful weapon that he had. This moment was a turning point for Rand as a character. He realized that becoming hard and cold would only make it easier for the Dark One to defeat him, and that he to embrace the human inside of him to defeat his inner evils and also the evils of the Dark One.

J Kaplan is finished with Crossroads of Twilight (The Wheel of Time, #10)
The structure of Crossroads of Twilight involves both alternating characters between chapters and parallel perspectives as well. Throughout different chapters, different characters have their perspectives aired, though sometimes characters will experience the same event in their own respective chapters. For example, both Elayne and Egwene experienced Rand cleanse saidin separately during different chapters.

If I were to be a character in my book, I would be a mentor to Egwene, a protagonist. I find that she is oblivious to some important details, some of which could hurt her. For example, she is constantly suffering from headaches which can only be alleviated by one character, headaches that are immune to magical healing. The character soothing her headaches is definitely causing them, and I wold point this out to her.

J Kaplan is finished with Winter's Heart (The Wheel of Time, #9)
Elyas Machera falls into the character archetype category of outcast. Elyas, a Warder (which is a highly trained warrior), started to develop an ability to communicate with wolves, a never-before-seen skill. Thinking the ability dangerous, other Warders tried to kill him, leading to Elyas barely escaping with his life. After the attempt on his life, Elyas steered away from other people and spent his time in solitude.

J Kaplan is on page 422 of 685 of The Path of Daggers (The Wheel of Time, #8)
The main character of The Path of Daggers, Rand al'Thor, is motivated throughout the book by duty. According to the Prophecy of the Dragon Reborn, Rand must fight the source of ultimate evil in the Last Battle. Rand has completely accepted this burden, and every decision he makes, with some affecting the safety of his friends and family, is orientated around him fulfilling the prophecy and saving the world.

J Kaplan is on page 114 of 685 of The Path of Daggers (The Wheel of Time, #8)
The tone of The Path of Daggers is mostly sinister. For example, there is a scene in the book in which Moridin, a character shrouded in mystery, is stalking Avienda, a protagonist. This scene clearly held a sinister tone, as Avienda described Moridin in a way that emphasized how dangerous he was. She kept mentioning that there was something wrong about him and kept lamenting that he unnerved her.

Rand is a round character and Bair is a flat character. Rand struggled internally, because he was not sure if he could meet the expectations required of him by the prophesy of the Dragon Reborn. He also responded differently to different situations. Bair, a tribe leader of the Aiel, was a stereotypical mother figure who never made a decision that strayed from her role. She had no internal conflict and didn't change.

Couladin is an unsympathetic character in Fires of Heaven. An important member of the Shaido tribe, Couladin is filled with as much complacent ambition as he is arrogance. Since the event of his tribe leader's death, Couladin has all but assumed the position. Rand, the protagonist, must fulfill a prophesy and unite all of the tribes, but Couladin thinks that it is his destiny to fulfill the prophesy rather than Rand.

J Kaplan is on page 186 of 800 of The Eye of the World (The Wheel of Time, #1)
The Eye of the World is mostly plot driven, as a character called the Dark One (the ultimate antagonist), takes an interest in a group of human boys, one being Rand. This becomes the problem, and the rest of the book involves running away from the Dark One, and having skirmishes with his allies along the way. At this point, the characters are simply trying to escape, but the end goal is likely defeating the Dark One.

How did Thatcher retain a sense of self and purpose after he fought in World War Two? Laurel's husband, Derby, fought in the same war but was never the same afterward. In fact, he eventually committed suicide because of post-war depression. Thatcher, on the other hand, has completely unchanged thoughts and actions. He managed to maintain his positive attitude, and even his goals coming out of the war are the same.

J Kaplan is on page 323 of 420 of The Risk Agent (Risk Agent, #1)
In The Risk Agent, the CEO of the company tasked with building a skyscraper in China, Marquardt, is likely part of the crime involving the kidnapping of a company worker. This is because his assistant was reluctant to disclose company finance files to the investigators, the same files that the kidnapped employee handled. This shows that Marquardt might be trying to cover up his involvement in the kidnapping.

J Kaplan is on page 628 of 706 of Fire & Blood (A Targaryen History, #1)
Alyn Velaryon, protagonist of Fire and Blood for a portion of the book, had clear goals. Velaryon wanted to gain the respect of the Iron Throne and the high court. As a young bastard-born boy made lord, he knew that this could only be done with a daring stunt. This is visible, as when he served as an admiral in the royal fleet, he disregarded superior orders to fight in a risky battle that, once won, got him respect.

J Kaplan is on page 435 of 453 of Catch-22
Catch 22 is an 3rd person omniscient work, because although there is a focus on the main character, Yossarian, the narrator knows what every character is thinking. For example, when Yossarian and Milo are speaking to each other on page 256, the author switches from what Milo is thinking back to what Yossarian was thinking. This shows that it is omniscient 3rd person, as the narrator can see multiple perspectives.

J Kaplan is on page 201 of 453 of Catch-22
The protagonists of Catch-22 are all of the soldiers stationed in Pianosa, including Yossarian and everyone else. The antagonist is the war itself and the general system that is used in the military during war. The soldiers are protagonists because their well-being is constantly hindered by the war. They suffer mental traumas, are dehumanized, and lack empathy for each other. An example of this is the Catch-22 rule.

J Kaplan is finished with Jerusalem: The Biography
In Jerusalem: A Biography, the conflict was character vs character, as Jerusalem's growth mostly contained many powerful people who wanted to use their advantages to gain the city. For example, in Part Five: Crusade, it is shown that the first crusade was started by one man: Pope Urban the Second. The pope's goal was to take Jerusalem from the grasp of the Muslims, specifically Atsiz, the Muslim ruler at the time.

J Kaplan is finished with Schindler’s List
In Schindler's List, Schindler's main motive that caused him to protect the Jews in his area was his strong set of morals. He believed that all people should be treated equally, and he was friends with some Jews before the war escalated. For example, Itzhak Stern, a Jewish businessman, developed a close friendship with Schindler before the war. He thought that because he could do something, he should do something.

J Kaplan is finished with Schindler’s List
Schindler's List has the structure of a descriptive narrative. This is because even though it is based on a historical truth, the author likes to emphasize the time, place, and mood consistently. For example, when Schindler buys a new factory to act as a haven for the Jews, the author spends multiple paragraphs describing just the factory itself, and a series of other paragraphs describing the mood of the factory.

In Schindler's list, the prologue clearly established the main character (Mr. Schindler) and the setting (Poland, 1943 in Autumn). It explains the social context of the book: that Poland is occupied by Germany. It depicts Schindler entering a banquet with a number of important German officers, showcasing his high social status. At the banquet, he exhibits kindness to a Jewish maid, foreshadowing his future choices.

In Moon Shot, one of the main characters, Deke Slayton, was ousted from the Mercury Space Program because of his irregular heart rate. If I could ask Slayton three questions, they would be how did it feel to be ousted from the space program, how strong was the bond between members of the space program, and how did you fell about the success of the Russian space program (proud of humanity or angry at rival success)?

One symbolic archetype of Dear Martin was when the main character, Justyce, started his journey by entering a car on pg. 115. On the car ride, Justyce and his friend Manny are shot by and off-duty police officer over loud music. The shots kill Manny and injure Justyce. This event shows the start of Justyce's journey because from this point on, Justyce works for getting justice for himself and Manny.

J Kaplan is finished with Bone Gap
In Bone Gap, the first sentence I saw that revealed the conflict was, "He couldn't close his eyes without seeing Roza's slim hands slapping at fogged glass, the gleaming black SUV swallowed up by the gathering dark." This tells me that this character witnessed the taking away of someone named Roza and is haunted by it. This suggests that the conflict of this book might be centered around the hunt for Roza.

I wonder if Tom Joad and his acquaintance will find his family before they leave for California. There has yet to be a large-scale conflict, and if Tom finds his family, the only objective for the characters will be to find work in California. This will be the case unless a conflict is already happening with his family, which was hinted when the former preacher did not know where they were and had not seen them.

Daniel in Everything Sad is Untrue is downtrodden, because Daniel is the embodiment of it. Daniel is a Persian refugee from Iran who had to leave his past life behind and his father to escape to safety in Oklahoma. He is often trodden down upon by his community and does nothing about it. He acts like he accepts the fact that his purpose is to be abused, which is why his character is shaped by him being downtrodden.
