Alyn Velaryon, protagonist of Fire and Blood for a portion of the book, had clear goals. Velaryon wanted to gain the respect of the Iron Throne and the high court. As a young bastard-born boy made lord, he knew that this could only be done with a daring stunt. This is visible, as when he served as an admiral in the royal fleet, he disregarded superior orders to fight in a risky battle that, once won, got him respect.
