Couladin is an unsympathetic character in Fires of Heaven. An important member of the Shaido tribe, Couladin is filled with as much complacent ambition as he is arrogance. Since the event of his tribe leader's death, Couladin has all but assumed the position. Rand, the protagonist, must fulfill a prophesy and unite all of the tribes, but Couladin thinks that it is his destiny to fulfill the prophesy rather than Rand.

Rand is a round character and Bair is a flat character. Rand struggled internally, because he was not sure if he could meet the expectations required of him by the prophesy of the Dragon Reborn. He also responded differently to different situations. Bair, a tribe leader of the Aiel, was a stereotypical mother figure who never made a decision that strayed from her role. She had no internal conflict and didn't change.
