In Jerusalem: A Biography, the conflict was character vs character, as Jerusalem's growth mostly contained many powerful people who wanted to use their advantages to gain the city. For example, in Part Five: Crusade, it is shown that the first crusade was started by one man: Pope Urban the Second. The pope's goal was to take Jerusalem from the grasp of the Muslims, specifically Atsiz, the Muslim ruler at the time.
