I assume the title's similarity to the Conrad novel is intentional. However, this is not nearly as dark or despairing as that. So far it's just rather entertaining. Derek Jacobi is very good in this role. (For dark and despairing, you want Series 2: The Master of Callous, which someone else described as "misery porn.") The twist at the end of episode two is intriguing -- but is it true?
