I'm actually writing chapter 11 of this book, which occurs in 1943. I had included a funny scene with a coin-operated vibrating bed -- but then did a bit of research and discovered that the Magic Fingers vibrating bed wasn't invented until 1958! Merde!

Blinking back tears and rage, she went to the Martinique Café with Non Earl to cry on her shoulder: another gig lost because she’s a girl. She used to think talent and skill were what you needed to play music, but it turns out that a penis is also mandatory.

“There’s nothing small about your sound,” he said when she’d finished. “When can you start?” Right now, she started to say but a hard-eyed man with a mean mustache came barreling up from the bar and said they had a rule against girl musicians, that this was a nightclub and not a bordello.
