If she doesn’t get this gig, Dot will have to teach piano lessons, maybe for the rest of her life or, even worse, until she gets married. Dooley comes running in with a fedora that matches the suit and she grins. This will work. It has to.

"...she had an appetite, not like them prissy-assed city hens who nibble on iceberg lettuce and carrot sticks thinking that skin, bones and stinginess will bring the men running. I could tell them a thing or two about men: what they like these girls don’t want to give."

I'm actually writing chapter 11 of this book, which occurs in 1943. I had included a funny scene with a coin-operated vibrating bed -- but then did a bit of research and discovered that the Magic Fingers vibrating bed wasn't invented until 1958! Merde!

Blinking back tears and rage, she went to the Martinique Café with Non Earl to cry on her shoulder: another gig lost because she’s a girl. She used to think talent and skill were what you needed to play music, but it turns out that a penis is also mandatory.

"We like our dames slinky," he said.
She’d wear anything he wanted her to, but he shook his head and said you can’t make a silk purse from a sow’s ear and so she picked up her instrument and left, her friend Non Earl behind her cursing, the band leader grasping for her hand and saying he was sorry, that he didn’t make the rules.

“There’s nothing small about your sound,” he said when she’d finished. “When can you start?” Right now, she started to say but a hard-eyed man with a mean mustache came barreling up from the bar and said they had a rule against girl musicians, that this was a nightclub and not a bordello.

In the prologue of my work-in-progress, Billy's adopted son, Bill Jr., reminisces about his 'dad':
"You did not ever go into any room that Dad was in without knocking. He was the most private person anybody ever knew. Modest, Mom said, to a tee: In twenty years she’d never seen him naked, not even partially. None of us had."
