Getting close to the end. Not so upbeat now. Something about the cold room reminds me of The Magician’s Nephew, when they find Jadis in a state of suspended animation in her realm.

I wonder about Daniel’s past. I suspect he went to a single sex school. He’s extremely likeable & very upbeat. Talented in many areas. I wonder if he completed his education or dropped out because he found school limiting. People don’t confound him, but he has an odd detachment. He must have an escape plan if people target his house. “An Englishman’s home is his castle.” Considering his home defence.

Anjukka could tell that Daniel prefers curvier women just by looking at him. Sakura could tell what Viola was just by looking at her. How? When I think of Novak’s talk of ancient Egyptian royalty, the themes embalming & incest are quite sinister. I really wonder if Piper’s research included interviews. I feel he thoroughly enjoyed all that went into the creation this book because it’s so entertaining to read.

Glad things weren’t too dire for Daniel. Goodness, he really gets all the women! Wonder what he did in a past life to get good karma like that with the opposite sex. He needs to hydrate more, cut back on the coffee & alcohol.

I don’t like the title of this upcoming chapter as I fear it doesn’t bode well for Daniel. I think Daniel may have gone to one of those schools where he’d have been addressed by his last name. I wonder if Piper’s the sort of person who shows up in restaurants as the mystery guest. Now I’m thinking of Mystic Pizza.

Piper might be a supertaster, the way he writes about food & drink. And scents & sights. I wonder who/ what inspired Novak, who’s a bit like a diminutive Baron Vladimir Harkonnen. I know nothing about what Daniel really looks like. I have a feeling it won’t be in the text & if I ask the author, he might say, “He looks just like me,” & I can’t be certain if that’d be a joke or not.

This is very enjoyable to read. Even when it’s nasty, dark & violent, it’s written in such a lively, upbeat way that it’s interesting & exciting rather than sickening. Yep, Daniel’s a looker. He’s a fascinatingly untouched individual. Somehow, despite all his experience of life, dirt has never stuck to him. What Novak said about ancient Egyptian royalty seems ominous in light of Viola & Raleigh.

Daniel’s got to be a looker, the way women are drawn to him. So he’s not an ex-cop. Ex-army? He seems insanely drawn to women. It’s not just a sex drive thing. There’s an emotional expect to his attraction that makes me curious. Why would he care about the women at the place he goes to with Bream feel when they don’t buy alcohol? Why does he feel responsible for women he barely knows?

Is Jodie especially innocent? Maybe straightforward & uncomplicated. Daniel must be an attractive man to have attractive women make a beeline for him like that. I assume he’s in good shape, but otherwise don’t know what he looks like. The book title’s starting to seem ominous.
