Words bubbled up in my mouth and solidified there, like stone. My instincts screamed at me to lie. To shield my vulnerability, my weakness. I had been weaned on deception, on pretence. I did not not know if I even had the ability to be honest, let alone how.

Fear, panic, and suspicion nobbled at the corners of my mind. Why would she help me? I was not entirely sure, given a similar situation, that I would have helped her.
I love seeing characters forced to do some soul-searching.

The intrigue is building!
There are so many possible directions these relationships could take, and I can't guess where they will go because no direction seems obvious.
Theoai is starting to come across as more steely and potentially devious than I thought at first, so nice slow character reveal here.

I kept the hood of the cloak up and the frogs closed, and pulled the long sleeves of my dull green dress over my hands as I climbed the creaking steps to the long, narrow deck of my rescuers' iron-hull.
I love details like the frogs on the cloak -- it's a great visual for how the cloak is constructed.
This is keeping me zooming along to find out what happens in Theo's future and what happened in her past.
