Oh, Marcus. *shakes head* My faith in you (and your intelligence) has been shaken.

"At least this way he could self-destruct without witnesses, without pity. Without seeing that look in her eyes, the love turned to resentment." - I believe I have just found the sentiment that has controlled Marcus's every thought for years.

Ah hah! I knew it! I'm surprised that Stephen was able to get someone to learn his secret so easily though.

"And she didn't know what say when he had shut her out so completely. There was no rational argument, because whatever was behind this was driven by emotion. Something wholly uncharacteristic for Marcus, who tended toward strategic, rational thinking."

"Her favorite golden comb clattered to the floor. He wondered if he could kick it under the bed, to keep it for later."

Mmmm, looks like Isabella is becoming dissatisfied with the status quo. Good, I'm ready for her to stop settling for crumbs.

"Battered by emotions he didn't want. Crushed by the blossoming of things he wanted so badly he could taste. Emotions that would never leave, but relationships that could only slip from his grasp." - *sniff, sniff* I just want to give him a hug!

"You don't usually. Generally you are unnaturally still. But when you reenter a room, occasionally you make last minute adjustments. What I've never reasoned out is whether you are meeting women or men." He stopped dead, forward motion forgotten. "Pardon me?" - LOL. It's sad when you find out you're not as slick as you thought.

***SPOILERS***People are involving her in one of his plots, and everyone shows up at her house to protect her. Instead of telling her he tries to put it off for a few more days and gets her to go away with him instead.
The fact that he continued to lie to her instead of admitting the truth seemed really dumb to me. That was the perfect moment! I know he's afraid to spoil her illusions of him, but come on! She's in danger!
He rationalizes it to himself (because he knows his decision is dumb) by saying that the bad guy won't be able to regroup so fast so he'll have a few more days until he has to tell her.
I like that he was honest with himself about doing it for himself and that he felt guilty, but I'm still ticked! I hope there is a reckoning for that later!
Yeah. And it is yet another example of him taking in their relationship, and giving nothing. Ah-hem. ;)
LOL! I actually feel better about this now that I have read a few more pages. Isabella's not unaware of his hidden motives, even though she doesn't know what they are. She knows he's playing another game (her term) and she is consciously choosing to play along. She hopes he'll open up to her about it, but she's not depending on it.
I can except a lot of shifty things if I feel that the characters are aware that they're being played and choose to participate anyway.
Yeah, I agree with what you are saying. I just don't think it makes it better on his part. It is like the cruel behavior at the ball that we were talking about in that other threat. He's taking advantage. Whether she's on to it or not, he's being selfish here. Again. The rest of it is just another example of what a strong person she is. She is willing to keep putting herself out there.
