I read this one for Shulem Shtisel recommended the author.
I was stupidly surprised to find Yentl among the stories.
The stories are not the cheer-me-up kind, but the style is pretty characteristic (event though there are many different translators, including Saul Bellow) and convey the epoch and place where they take place.
It wears off a little in the end, but one can see why Shulem was so impressed.
