His main negative thesis is that beginning with Hobbes, a cynicism towards rhetoric developed because of how he viewed man's abilities. I don't know how this can be squared with the big, fat, enlightenment between Hobbes (ch. 1) and Rousseau (ch. 2), still, keeping an open mind.
