Reading this for Emily Hurricane's discord book club. I read the first few chapters today in a livestream readalong. It's very atmospheric and I love that we have so much hallmark vampire stuff happening right away: Dracula has no reflection in the mirror and loses it when the MC cuts himself shaving

Just slogged through to almost the end of chapter 13 and I still feel the same: this book is incredibly boring. I know, I know. It's a classic, so I'm the big dummy if I don't like it. The book is not difficult to understand: it's just all the events are boring. Lucy is dead and I'm still hearing all about the boring ass blood transfusions and her waxing and waning health

I've been trying not to say this, and to give the book a chance because it's a classic, but DAMN this book is boring

It's really interesting reading this right after watching Nosferatu. That silent film really is an unofficial adaptation.

I'm reading the version with the intro by Peter Straub (no idea how to find the right edition of the book on here). Straub's intro calls the scene with Harker and the three female vampires in the first act a symbolic castration, as Harker is passive, which Straub says is feminine. He does not explain WHY passive is supposedly feminine or WHY a female being sexually forward is basically a symbolic castration.
