I'm going into this book incredibly skeptical. A book where a mentally ill woman is confined to an attic is feminist? IDGAF it's a metaphor. I am a woman with psychosis and I am not anybody's fucking shadow self. I'm not the darkness laying latent in you for you to ponder. From what I know of this book, anybody who enjoys it should be ashamed and is no mental health ally.

There is a recurring theme of wishing to elicit desire from others, just for thrill of power one gets from denying them. Gwendolyn wants men to desire her just so that she has the power to reject them. Mr.Grandcourt wants his uncle to desire his home just so that he has the power to reject his offer to buy it. This book is saying something about the sense of identity that comes from being the one to deny others

Just finished the introduction. I'm a bit daunted by this book (as I'm not big on poetry or Shakespeare-who apparently was a massive influence on Goethe), but I'm also excited for a challenge. I read mostly fluff in 2021, so let's see how this goes. I have read Marlowe's Dr. Faustus, so it will be interesting to compare the 2 works.

There's so much wrong with this book, both factually and from a common sense standpoint. This will absolutely be a one-star for me. But for now, I don't even know where to start with this damn book. It will be easier to talk about the few areas of agreement I share with the author: the soda tax is stupid and food should be a human right not tied to labor. Reporting sexual assault is scary and police don't seem...

Poor Rex. Gwendolyn is definitely a bit of a cunt to let all these dudes orbit her just to freaking yell at them when they admit their feelings. It's def very cruel that she enjoys knowing men are in love with her and lets them hang around like that.

Gwendolyn is a delightfully flawed main character. The entire book so far is a wonderfully nuanced character study

So we have our intro to our main characters in this chapter. Gwendolyn is interesting and Deronda is...annoying. This is a criticism of the fictional man, not the writing. Some books call for annoying shithead characters. And wow, even in this brief introduction, does this dude strike me as a shithead.

I wasn't sure how I would feel about The Judge's House, bc Dracula was boring as hell imo. But this was a scary and very atmospheric ghost story and I liked it a lot

The Shadow in the Corner was very creepy and I enjoyed it a lot. The Upper Berth was another scary read and I liked that it was set on a boat. A Wicked Voice on the other hand....my gosh would a long, boring slog of a short story. Stuff kind of made sense once i got to the end. Still wasn't worth pushing through to the end. Very boring story that dragged like fuck.

I took this book out from the library back in 2019 and read the first 2 stories. Now I have it checked out again. I remembered the Phantom stagecoach story, but not The Squire's Will. I'm really glad I reread The Squire's Will. It was incredibly eerie. Especially all the descriptions of the dog's body stretching out, contorting and undulating.

That sex scene was....fine. It was the most 'fine' sex scene I think I've ever read. It wasn't awful, but it also wasn't good. I read SO MANY pages of alien santa worldbuilding to get there

There is a LOT of repetition in this book. We get it Locke: There are all sorts of reasons why the argument that the Bible supports monarchy doesn't make sense. Did you have any other points to make or....?

I don't think this book knows what it wants to be...It's trying way too hard to be 'Kissed by the Coronavirus' meme-able. But the world-building is too fleshed out to be a meme. And I'm halfway through it and no sex has happened. Plus, the tense changes! I don't expect great writing with books like this, but past or present, pick a tense and stick with it for the love of God.

The guy was a virgin and he almost came immediately and was super embarrassed and she has to reassure him the whole time and tell him what a good job he did! *SWOOON* Can all romance novel sex scenes be like this forever? Please and thank you. Asking on behalf of all the women who want GFD cuteness in their romances

Really strong start to the story. Writer protagonists are overdone, but I find myself connecting to the main character anyway. Plenty of creepiness right from the jump. Love a good haunted house story

The hero of this book is a lonely male virgin. Yeah yeah, I know there's something fucking wrong with me but *ss-woon!* Nice job, Zoe Chant. Now lose the muscles and make him short.

The conflict in this story is incredibly manufactured. Both characters are crazy about each other, yet for some reason, they can't just communicate. I do really like the female lead though. As a messy self-sabotaging grump myself, I feel this lady.

A lot of repetition in this book, but it is a bit dense, so I suppose that's a good thing. Locke really didn't want anybody to miss his points (so he makes all of them approximately 15x each).

Just slogged through to almost the end of chapter 13 and I still feel the same: this book is incredibly boring. I know, I know. It's a classic, so I'm the big dummy if I don't like it. The book is not difficult to understand: it's just all the events are boring. Lucy is dead and I'm still hearing all about the boring ass blood transfusions and her waxing and waning health

This lady is working 16 hour days and then this guy keeps taking her out for all kinds of exhausting dates at 10/11 at night. And two dates two nights in a row?? We know why HE is coming on so strong, but why is SHE entertaining this at all? He's coming across needy and clingy and she should be tired as all fuck with the retail scheduled she's working and not be in the mood for such complex/exhausting dates

Sometimes I almost feel like these Zoe Chant books are making fun of fat women. I mean...they are curvy woman romance....where the heroine is constantly eating. At least once per book the hero and Heroine share a meal and the food is described in more detail than the sex scenes.

This book combines two of my favorite subgenres: christmas romance and shifter romance. And it's set in Antarctica with a socially awkward hero. I'm here for it

Okay the meet cute with the dunk tank is way too cute <3 What a great way for a romance novel couple to meet

Such a cute small town with so many colorful characters. This one has a really good dose of humor too. Zoe Chant always write cute, wholesome shifter books with a cozy vibe.

George picking Lu up in the bar might be the best meet cute I've ever read XD

Putting people into diabetic comas ON PURPOSE-this was happening in the mid-1950s. Yet people blindly trust psychiatry today. Psychiatry has always been cruel and a human rights violation-it will never NOT be that-save for maybe when it is applied to white middle class people with manageable, mild issues. For everyone else, psychiatry is a gateway to incredible harm. There's no need to clinicalize human suffering.

About to start the Emerald Aoghonsa story. This is another I haven't read yet. I only know that it's set in a castle and I love any stories with a medieval feel

I just finished Dee Rasha's romance. This is one that I had the chance to beta read during the production of the book. The final version is the same as the version that I read earlier.
