I'm going into this book incredibly skeptical. A book where a mentally ill woman is confined to an attic is feminist? IDGAF it's a metaphor. I am a woman with psychosis and I am not anybody's fucking shadow self. I'm not the darkness laying latent in you for you to ponder. From what I know of this book, anybody who enjoys it should be ashamed and is no mental health ally.

Jyvur Entropy I'm being about as open-minded as I can be. But since I just saw first-hand that this book causes people to dehumanize the mentally ill. Is it really that hard to say "Yeah, that treatment was fucked up"-you'd rather spend way more energy defending Victorian mental health care? I don't care about what Victorians did with their mentally ill. I care that the modern reader can enjoy this book-a book with a plot that hinges on dehumanizing the mentally ill (I AM NOT your fucking metaphor! I'm a person!) without considering the treatment of the mentally ill character critically. I think a quick "Yeah, that was fucked up" would suffice for me. Haven't gotten it yet. I'm literally reminded every damn day how little people think of women with psychosis and how we get left out of every fucking conversation: a book with incredible abuse of a mentally ill woman is "feminist" and all the mental health conversations focus on the quirky-but-not-scary mental illnesses. I'm fucking fed up. Humans fucking suck.
I WAS the madwoman in the attic for my family. I went through years of abuse and then was thrust into the mental health system starting at 14. I don't appreciate the abled people of the world enjoying this story of an abled woman's happy ending built from the suffering of a disabled woman. I AM NOT your fucking character arc.
