The first essay, on “The New Paganism” could easily, with few alterations, be written today. Much of what Belloc warns of has come to pass. One argument he makes is that a new paganism will result in the return of a subordinate status akin to slavery. This we have not yet seen, and I am sceptical will ever see. I should read his The Servile State.

It is depressing to reflect on what seemed possible and plausible for Catholics ninety years ago compared with today. There is an assumption of regularity and orthodoxy that has been entirely washed away.

Tolkien would have undoubtedly hated the malign definition Belloc gives to myth, but he’s actually pretty good on the substance. Belloc uses “legend” to encompass all that is good in myth, and defines myth simply as historical falsehood masquerading as truth.

Interesting and still thought-provoking essay on converting England. Circumstances have changed greatly, but a lot of the considerations remain relevant, and it’s a good structure for thinking about evangelical work in the most ambitious scope.

Very thoughtful and relevant discussion of evangelizing a sceptic. But it is also a profound challenge today - the holiness of the Church is hard to see.

Usury is a subject on which it is difficult to ever quite get one’s head around. Belloc does a good job and isn’t vituperative, but I at least continue to find the matter flummoxing.
