Peter In which language did you write your comment, Portuguese? Is there any relation between the Vikings and Portugal?

JV Yes, portuguese. Nothing much beyond the usual plunder, burning and killing. When Portugal was still part of al-Ândalus. But as normans they were instrumental during Portugal's reconquista from the moors. During the crusades the englishmen, normans and other christians of Viking descent were heading to the Holy Land - and Portugal was on their way. Afonso Henriques was skillful in obtaining their services, specially during Lisbon's siege.

This post is about the discrepancy of northern male and female names in western europe. According to the book I'm reading 300 male names were adopted in comparison with 6 female names from Viking descent. The Vikings (and Goths before then), after invading so many of these western lands, gave many names to their sons and left to their romanesque woman to decide that of their daughters.

Thanks for the comment.
