Currently reading the chapter ‘Bodily Reading of the Lotus Sutra’ and it’s interesting to contemplate treating a book as the body of a buddha. I’m also quite taken with ‘ichinen sanzen’, three thousand realms in a single thought moment. Enlightenment attained through complete devotion to a sutra makes for quite a contrast to being based on the three trainings.

Much of this book is very academic, outside the practice, observing rather than engaging. While somewhat interesting, not particularly supportive of practice.

“William Graham observes that there is nothing about the formal appearance of holy scripture that preannounces a given text as ‘sacred’…no specific characteristic—written script, material composition, literary or phonetic form—accounts intrinsically for the ways in which particular texts are assigned the sort of privileged status…we might call ‘sacred’.” No, duh. Captain Obvious is a professor? LOL

Just finished the gender & hierarchy chapter, interesting historical contextual information.
So much of the original purpose of the Lotus has been fulfilled, and yet we still find practice guidance in it.
