I'm about a third of the way through this and two things stand out: the Chinese really, really, really hate the Japanese. The atrocities the Japanese committed during the pre-war occupation of China and during WWII are still fresh in their minds and far from forgiven. Secondly, Chinese writers still have to tiptoe around the 50s and 60s abuses of Maoism.
