Victorians didn't make lesbian activities illegal. It wasn't exactly acceptable, therefore still usually secretive, but there was little focus on it in broader society/religion. However, for working class women who wanted to have a relationship with other women, one almost always had to take on the role and look of a man (trans or not). Thank goodness for diaries, indeed.

They started out with such good intentions, but... ugh. What's continually upsetting to me, having read many first-hand accounts, studies, articles, etc. pertaining to mental hospitals in the Victorian age, is how little has really changed.
