Went back and began at the beginning — a novel idea, no? Very interesting—and quite a fantastic life these people led!

Harry was quite a guy and I’m enjoying learning about him, but the book is full of problems. Here we learn about “actor James Coburn, a horse owner, sitting high up in the boxes wearing a monocle . . .” at the 1953 Kentucky Derby. Uh, JAMES Coburn was in his early 20s and probably could not have afforded to GO to the Derby, let alone own race horses. It’s CHARLES Coburn here! Where ARE the editors??

Not actually on page one; dipped into Chapter 13 and DAMN there was one of those egregious errors that make one doubt the accuracy of everything: “Calumet (Farm) dominated racing in the 1940s and ‘50s, having won the Triple Crown twice with Citation…”.

Sorry, a horse can only win the “Triple Crown” once — it’s for three-year-olds only!
