The Gamle is suddenly there? Ok, I have to say one thing: my book was so cheap because it is a "books of poor quality", meaning during the translation or printing there have been mistakes that lower the value. Which could explain some odd word choices.
But anyway, the fighting is going on and after C. Clare, ist nice to see some actual fights where you see that good ideas do not necessarily lead to the best results.

That the Kretters are suddenly there to besiege the cliff-castle is a tad too convienent and forced to seem thought through. After all apparently they went through the 10 days storm just for the rumoured gold and to kill Karain because they think he is a demon. Sure the writing is good and we see a darker side of the cliff-people's leader (he straight murdered the Kretter's amnassador) but still...

Ok, the colorism isn't that strong, Kirgits mother is dark-haired and the "birdmain" before Karain named Uul was from Tuur and maybe his feathers were white and Karain's black for aesthetic reasons.
And after reading CC it is nice to read something where the images in your head become alive while reading it without them being practically torn apart and replaced with totally unfitting ones all the time.

I wouldn't say this book is perfect (e.g. right now there was a reference to a story the reader could not possibly know about and with the people welcoming Karain so far all being blond suggests that the colorism I suspected is there) but for its target demographic (early teens) I would say its at the very least an ok book to read. It's certainly done with more care than many "bestsellers" of recent years.

Well Karain's transformation was a tad too quick for my taste and you have to ask yourself how even several ravens could lift a 14 year old boy, but I doubt that a reader of similar age, who are the target demographic in my mind, would notice.

I think its safe to say that the Kretters are based on Arab muslims with their clothes and customs. Not sure what the Tuurers are based on, their "horses" are apparently camels... maybe they are based on beduines or tuaregs.

Since I read this a second time I have spotted a plothole: the narrator is obviously the older version of the protagonist. So how, does he know certain things? His parents did not tell him what happened in Krugant or what they talked about and there is no mentioning of him hearing anything, so how does he know that?

Even though the writing is pretty simple, it is clearly a book for people in their early teens, it is nice to see some acknowledged multifaceted characters, e.g. the spirit Bule had an idea to simply cross the sea by boat, which the others dreaded to (wood-spirit thing), and while he dreaded it himself he couldn't deny himself to be smarter and braver than Beele and Veele. (I had to convert the names to english)

While the stakes have become clear now with the introduction of the woodland spirits it is often pretty funny. Trollhunters are these at most 30 cm high spirits, that one spirit knows cold weather is coming based on how his nose hair tickles and I imagine how two of their names would be translated in English. :D

I guess back then I didn't notice the foreshadowing in this book.
The father convinced the town militia that he had killed the demon hiding in his son while actually hiding his son Karain. Oh right, I think I never mentioned: Karain is 13 years old, has a cleft lip, only 3 clawed fingers on each hand and has a face covered with black hair. Strangely some bullies called him featherface. Maybe a translation error...

Interesting. Some parts of the stories I recognized from reading it back then but the foreshadowing with the raven I forgot.
Also I asked a coworker and apparently this here is good prose and I am not just starved from reading all these C. Clare books. A simile like "the voices travelled from one hut to the next like birds" actually makes sense.
