I remember the Dean saying Azami was disowned in vol. 16? I was under the impression Japan was still pretty serious about that stuff - family names, lines, etc.
I would think having been kicked out he'd be 'ronin' and lose the right to use the Nakiri name. Especially since it was only his married name, having taken on his wifes'.
No one mentions it, though.
