Read the wonderful story of “Rumpole and the Old Familiar Faces,” the first of eight delightful stories in this seasonal collection. Like I do with A Christmas Carol, I read these entertaining stories every season to keep me in the Christmas mood.

“Rumpole and Father Christmas,” is another short story. Rumpole does not boast about his goodness and let’s Hilda have a frustrated last word.

“Rumpole and the Christmas Party,” is a very story but with Horace proposing a toast to the English criminal without whom many people would have other jobs.

Another fine story, “Rumpole and the Millennium Bug,”with a vanquished Hilda and a triumphant Rumpole at it’s heart; all due to Dodo Macintosh.

A nice story concerning the concern Rumpole has for others in need, and a wonderful conclusion the circumstances that opened the story.

I love the Rumpole stories overall. Mortimer has a way of sneaking in a moral or two occasionally. In the second story, “Rumple and the Christmas Break,” a sentence towards the end is of great importance: “The day when a suspected terrorist doesn’t get a fair trial will be the day they’ve won the battle” (p. 70).
