The sections on early class societies and were interesting. I definitely gained a new perspective on the history of class differences and labor exploitation. Currently reading about the protestant reformation and it feels like the author is racing to get to modernity and Marxism. The Hapsburgs were never introduced but of course keep cropping up. Still a worthwhile read.

The narrative speeds along. I’m still surprised by some of the events the author omits. For example, Chernobyl isn’t mentioned at all even though Gorbachev believed that moment initiated the fall of the Soviet Union. That seems important to me because it highlights many of the issues with soviet-style communism (e.g. bureaucracy) and is significant in a story where communism is a main character.
