Sweet merciful heavens, that was fucking intense. Beyond intense. I'm exhausted. I need to just... close my eyes and rest a minute, catch my breath and think a spell, before reading on. (Of course, after I rest, I'll pick this book up and start again... by rereading that scene. The build up to it made it all the more... More. (Imagine the pitiful wrenches watching this scene unfold!)

Well. Well. I am impressed. Last fifty pages are just so... Yes. I avoided this book for so long, distracted by other, shiner looking books with direct blurb and reviewer appeal for me, but this one! This one was the true prize.

Okay, I'm back. I think that scene has sufficiently been seared into my brain. Now, I'm noticing that the last two dreams V has had have strong biblical imagery: one from the old testament (fruit, snake, tree, course of action) and one from the new testament (angel tellin mother of Christ not to be afraid and that her lord hears her cries).

Dear lord, this scene is giving me waves and waves of angst empathy: flushed clenches and sick to my stomach thinking of v! God, but it's powerful. So good.

Now I'm the one chanting: oh my god oh my god oh my god! Nooooo! This is fucking wild! My eyes! Like this: O_O and then, like this: T_T! Ominous Feeling has come to fruition: V was going to be A's whipping boy. Or just all 'round "take all my negative self feelings out on you" object. Motivation galore. And, I must comment on the author's clever interweaving of hope and foreshadowing with V's conversations with N.

V did see the problem of not being a freeman, not being able to pursue any relationship with M, but he didn't have enough motivation. But! Ah, HERE is the motivation for V to want to be a free man. He was reasonably content under P, but under A? Furgettaboutit.

Oh dear. Recipe for cruelty and angsty moments? A man who already hates V because he's jealous of V's skills at running a household, is now V's new master. Aaaaand, V was specifically sent to this man to teach him how to run his household. Ouch. Pride and jealousy. And complete power over V. Looking ominous.

What a fabulously clippy pace! NOW what will happen to V?! I don't even mind the intro of new characters at this late date--the wise woman, the new household's members--because I am so engaged with and committed to V! The focus of this novel is a character study of V, that's for sure.

Oh man, do I know how frustrating it is to (try to) walk somewhere in the type of (perfectly described) weather that is alluded to here! "The wind no longer tried to tear up the landscape and throw it at them."

Also, I am impressed with the tension building. There are a lot of things going on, all related and all drawing my empathy: the mystery of and the resulting quest for the child-eating demon, V's slavery versus freedom, and V and M's growing relationship.
