In the mood for a touch of this today for some reason. And even though I'm going through it very slowly and not very far in at all, my instinct is that Emma Holly might become a go-to for this new genre for me---that is if the elements and narration style is similar across her work, I guess. There's so much in here for description and quotes. Plus we discover critical character details about Magnus!

And on to interesting Fairyville urban legends!

"Oprah fans were favorite targets for interrogation. As long as you appealed to their emotions, you could almost always get them to talk.

"On occasion, Alex had seen his partner respond to women just as he would himself: with automatic sexual speculation...So Bryan wasn't giving off unavailable vibes; he was giving off vibes that said he'd be a challenge."

Nice self-deprecating satirical play on tropes with the Fairyville hotel room always available because of strange occurrences.

(p. 36) “The fey were a lusty lot, and sex was like food to them: something to be enjoyed with gusto, not life or death serious[ness]...but to his kind nothing compared to the delicious skin-to-skin contact of intercourse. He needed that like a Phoenix needed water, and without it he felt himself approaching a state that, for a naturally cheerful person like him, resembled surliness.“ So *that* explains Tinkerbell...

Interesting turn here. A charming characterisation of a kid with magical powers, a hysterical uncouth unappreciative mother, our setting in question now associated and infused with Irish folktale changling rumours, M-M erotic fantasies and likely development futher along in the story...

Almost seems like a different genre here, Stephen King/Dean Koontz vibes now. This may get interesting and weird fast.

Things got teasingly steamy in a jiffy. But only teasingly. The denial is strong here. So that's how these authors do things....

"Toe-to-toe Magnus could make an Amazon feel delicate."

Clairvoyance lessons: "Although Mrs. Darling was a sweet old lady, sometimes Zoe wanted to shake out of her mundane world. Heaven loves you, she longed to say. What does it matter if your best friend cheats at bingo?"

Reads a little like a cozy mystery, campy and good for a silent chuckle.

"Maybe that's the secret to his stamina. Abstinence plus variety."

"[Her fairies being weirdly mum on said romantic advice because they normally don't shut up:] They aren't my slaves, Ter. They hang with me because they think I'm fun."

Mention of nearby Sedona and the small town local color makes me want to visit or move to Arizona again.

"You became [ a real Fairyviller] by having a psychic gift, by treating those who had psychic gifts with respect, or by being so Looney Tunes everyone figured you had to be touched by *something.*

Firmly in the so-Looney-Tunes camp, by the way.

lol at MC's relation of manager-slash-landlord's monthly full moon sexual debauches.

"Serious fairies, apparently, had little hope of rising through the ranks. Only the most persistently positive could be queen."

When better to begin a strange desert town erotic romance featuring annoying fairy guardians as such in Cinderella than at a local legend fairy garden in a town known for spiritualism + clairvoyance?!
