I absolutely love the writing, but damn, this is the story of a guy who did everything wrong and now desperately wants his ex-boyfriend back who gave up on him after two years of separation and moved on with another guy. That's so sad...

Next he would ask about lovers. But no. The Old Man was unlikely to make that mistake. Instead he made a sound of impatience. “What about your flat? Your car? Your book collection?”
I said nothing. What was there to say? My book collection? Why didn’t I simply eat my pistol now?

Oh man, it's always painful to read an older book where the characters are fighting the Taliban in Afghanistan, now knowing how this will end....

I find this extremely entertaining in a psychological way. The injured stranger, the ex-boyfriend and his new man.

“Lord of the Rings?”
“Have you seen it?” He sipped his wine, observing me with those elven-green eyes.
“No.”
“You’ll enjoy it. There’s a lot of dragon slaying.”

LOL, I bet Stephen hasn't seen it either, or maybe just while "Netflix and chilling" with someone.

“You’re not seriously worried about the age difference?”
“I could be your father.”
“I like older men. I like the fact that you’re experienced.” I kissed the bridge of his nose. “I like the fact that you’re wise.”
He snorted. “If I was wise I wouldn’t —”
I didn’t want to hear that. I cut him off, covering his lips with mine.

Sigh. Flashbacks...

“The Thorpes have lived in this valley for a long time. Mr. Stephen — Dr. Thorpe — is an important man to this community.”
“Yes.” I said, “He’s important to me too.”
She gave me a look then, but said nothing, turning back to the stove and flipping the toasting bread.
