I remember at the begining of the book i called Emma Bovary the stereotypical bored wife who doesn't know what she wants in life. WELL I WAS WRONG SHE'S A SUCCUBUS! She's the most unlikable character I've ever read about and I sat through creatures like marmeladov, the family of Gregor samsa, svidrigailov and even nastasia philipovna or madame blanche weren't this hateable. I know it's by design but she's made me mad

I hate Emma Bovary. Idk if Flaubert intended it or not but people who praise her for "embracing her womanhood" are idiots IDIOTS and nothing more she's not embracing anything she's just a multiple time cheater who doesn't even comfort Charles when his father dies and tricks him into sending her to Rouen for "council from Monsieur Léon" i can't stand how much Charles loves her and she just doesn't see it. I'm hurt

"She even asked herself why she detested Charles" the husband's sins of not noticing his wife's unhappiness and living a boring life as a hardworking country doctor bring out the worst qualities in Emma: melancholy by way of boredom and holding tight the embers of sadness and bad memories. Even when he noticed, he went from tostes to yonville to make his wife happier but follows the same life. Poor Emma, and Charles.

I'm sorry to say this and I know you'll take it the wrong way but, Emma Bovary is the stereotypical woman. She complains for no reason other than boredom, doesn't know what she wants and keeps sad memories with her without letting it die. It's sad really but Gustave Flaubert captured the bored housewife correctly, a woman who doesn't know what she wants and doesn't want to do anything other than sit and be sad. 10/10

Emma Bovary is a woman who sadly falls victim to romantic thought and ideas of a perfect world where she is a victim to bad chance. Léon, the embodiment of a man in love with an unattainable and taboo idea which tortures him and is symbolized by the fact that Emma lives on the second floor and Léon on the first, lodging with the chemist making her literally unavailable to him. So far, the book is wonderful but slow
